My finger was extremely swollen for about 2 1/2 weeks and very sore even still. The joint nearest the tip of the finger is still slightly swollen and painful. Unfortunately I am a musician and I use my fingers to play the piano. (also for typing) I have tried to not use that finger but it doesn't always work out. I figured it would get better so I didn't go to the doctor's or hospital. Now, the pain is still there and the weird (slightly numb) feeling on the tip when I touch or use my finger. Do you think it is (or was) broken or dislocated? What can I do for it? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You really need to see a doctor and get it Xray'd. You may have fractured your finger. If you broke your finger and it is not treated properly, you can suffer bone loss in that area and/or lose use of the joint affected in your finger. I recently fratured a toe, but I didn't know it because I had no pain afterwards. My brother fratured his pinkie and had no pain, either. My brother had it worse, though because his bone fused back together by itself improperly (he never went to the doc) and now he will never be able to straighten his finger again. Get an Xray. They will then be able to tell whether it's broken, dislocated, or just bruised. Slamming your finger into a car door is going to cause nerve damage or that slightly numb feeling, but that will heal in time - it's a good sign that you have SOME feeling. Until you can get to a doctor, you need to stabilize that entire finger by taping it to the finger next to it. If it is broken, the more you move it, the more damage you will cause and the harder it will be to treat.

Now, if it's just broken (or fractured), all the doctor can do is splint the finger and tell you to not use it for X amount of time. But if you dislocated it, that needs to be put back into place or maybe even operated on. Whatever they find out, once it has fully healed you need to make sure you are stretching out your finger on a daily basis. Injured joints have a tendency to tense up, and being a musician, you certainly don't want that.

P.S. I am not sure if a Chiropractor will see you and Xray your finger. I would call first before making an appointment. If they do, though, that is the easiest way to save you money. That way, you know either way and you can make a better decision from there. Good Luck!!

The numb feeling is nerve damage.
If it was dislocated you would not be able to bend your finger. If the finger is still discolored then the blood supply to the end of the finger was been interrupted. It could be a hairline fracture that you would have difficulty seeing on an xray. Go to a chiropractors office, they do Xrays for $25. Keep the hand up while resting and keep it cool. It will take another 30 days to heal. Don't aggravate it, let it rest if you can.

Stop typing and take some Tylenol. Get a finger splint from the pharmacy.
See a doctor. Ask about referrals to a chiropractor and a physiotherapist.
This is your health and your livelihood. Next time you have any pain lasting more than a week, make an appointment or go to a walk-in.

Ouch. That sounds bad, but it doesn't sound like broken/disloacted. Broken/dislocated is like, when you're CRYING how much it hurts and you like ZOOM to the hospital first thing instead of ignoring it for a month! I'd say go see a doctor, but heads up it's definetly neither of those. Sorry for the accident by the way?

I would not be surprised if you at least have a small fracture. If its in the tip of the finger, not much you can do , like breaking your toe. Ice it, and use first aid tape to wrap it, either to a splint or to the finger next to it. You can find either at a drug store. Honestly, if you are a musician by trade, I would get it looked at. You don't want to mess with your future by basing your decision on a yahoo answers forum.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck

If you are incredibly lucky, you got a bone bruise. If you are incredibly UNlucky, you did nerve damage (as seen by the slightly numb thing). Not sure what they can do for you at this point, but if you've decided not to go to the doctor, I guess that's all there is for it. You'll have to deal with whatever comes. here's hoping you iced it when it happened, and that you get to the doctor at some point, seeing as how, you know, you are a musician and need your HANDS!

go to a doctor as soon as you can. If you're a musician, and especially if you play piano, you have to take care of your hands.
Maybe this will be what determines if you really ARE a musician: if you're willing to take care of your instrument.
Go tomorrow morning, or as soon as you read this. Don't wait any longer.
