I went and saw a Dr. at a Conveint Care and was given Amoxicillian 875 mg and an antibiotic ear drop on Monday. My ear is clogged up and still hurts and my face and neck are still swollen. Should I go back to the Dr. or should I wait a little while longer for the antibiotics to work?

Remember that NHS Direct is available 24hrs on 08454647 for advice; there are several reasons why it might not be responding. It could be an outer ear infection called Otitis Externa "Swimmer's Ear" which responds well to drops (see info on patient.co.uk) but if the swelling is severe drops can't get in. oral antibiotics don't work well for the condition and you might need to have a 'wick' fed through the narrowing to get the drops deep.

If it is an inner ear infection Otitis Media (also on patient.co.uk then they are mostly viral - only one in 14 or so will respond to antibiotics and it might need to heal on its own. There are bacterial germs that are resistant to Amoxicillin however.

Other possibilities include Referred Pain where the problem is actually a tooth or a sinus... I think you ought to talk to your local GP service or NHS direct to talk it through properly

I have a son, Joey Niceforo, who is a young 27 year old tenor, with a group called "DESTINO" recording in Vancouver Bc, Canada.

For the last few weeks Joey has had a cold. Just a few days ago he developed an ear ache, a swollen ear and loss of hearing. He was diagnosed with serous otitis media (middle ear infection).

The major concern we have is that Joey and the Group DESTINO have been booked to open the Marie Osmond show in Disney World on April 3,

Have a quick remedy for our son??

Joey's ear got better just before flying.

He also got the special ear plugs for flying, and arrived in Florida, from Vancouver, on April 1st. On April 2nd he told us the ear was almost 100 percent, and he will, with the other, great DESTINO tenors be performing, in the COLORADO BALL ROOM DISNEY WORLD tonight at 7 pm.

This help was so effective, and helpful, to our young Canadian tenor, Joey Niceforo. I'm sure this input and therapy advice will, and has helped others.

Go back, the main infection may have been addressed but you may have fluid buildup or other issues remaining. There may still be some infection that is causing the pressure to build. Also as a long shot, how are your teeth? Bad molars have been know to cause pain felt in the ears. An infected tooth could pass the bacteria to the ear canals and if not corrected could reinfect later. Ask a pre-med. Luck

Your supposed to stay on the antibiotic for 10 days with a severe infection. You may need a stronger antibiotic like KEFLEX. If you can remember the Dr's name, it's usually on the bill, then call the Care Center and ask to talk to him. Sometimes they will change the prescription without you going in again for a paying visit. Good luck.

Did you take the full course of antibiotics? Are you taking them as directed? See what happens after you finish all the pills. And be sure to take ALL the pills, don't stop taking them even if you start feeling better.

I've had frequent ear infections and twice I've had my eardrum burst. Ear infections can take quite awhile to go away; along with the pain. Why don't you just call the dr's office & ask to speak to his nurse? That's the surest way to know what to do.

Go back. After 5 days the medication should have been exhibiting results.

I would check back with a doctor. You should have seen some results by now.
