NASA did the very basic design concepts, but the detail and final design was done by the contractors. All reported to NASA, which co-ordinated the work such that the output from all the different contractors could be put together into one coherent whole.

Contractors all across America worked on the Apollo project. My Dad worked for one as an inspector. It's a small source of family pride knowing that his inspection stamp is up there on the moon somewhere, on some part of the guidance systems of the lunar module ascent stages that were crashed into the moon after use.

Werner von Braun was the genius behind Americas landing on the moon. To this day I believe that had we not had von Braun we would never had gone to the moon. To NASA's discredit they do not focus nearly enough on this man who took them there and died several years ago. In my humble opinion von Braun should have gotten the Nobel prize in science for what he did with America's greatest engineering feat. Why didn't he get more attention? He was a Nazi and he designed and engineered the V-1 and V-2 rockets that killed thousands in England during WWII. Like Germany, America used him to get what they wanted but his love for rocketry and space exploration made him continue on. By the way, when von Braun died, so did our space program.

Edit update: I realize that von Braun did not do this alone but it was the ideas in his mind that got us there. The Saturn 5 was von Brauns baby not NASA's. von Braun is the one that came up with the idea of using a LM and CM and coasting to the moon. Bottom line, von Braun was thinking of landing on the Moon in the 40's when as a country, we were still designing propellers.

Almost all of the design work was done by NASA engineers, but the grunt work of putting everything together and making it work was done by contractors.

See I think you haven't got the full idea about all the cosmology. To build those things we require ->
1.)Astronomy
2.)Aerodynamics
3.)Mechanical knowledge
etc.
It is a group work done the scientists from all subjects and areas that succeeds
