that sounds like a rod knock, meaning the bearings on one of the piston connecting rods has gone bad, and is making all that noise banging against the crankshaft.

You could repair this engine, but it wouldn't be cheap - I wouldn't invest $1000 in purchasing the car.

If the car is a year 1998 or above, I would definitely pay the owner $1000 for the car, and then buy an entire used civic engine with less than 50,000 for about $700 (start calling junk yards or look on ebay. If you call junk yards, act like your a mechanic and ask for the shop price). Depending on the year of your Civic, they sell starting at $200 on ebay. Changing an entire engine on a car is not that big of a deal. You may have to buy new engine supports if the one's on it right now are in bad shape.

they,ll reason a gentle knocking sound ,yet it fairly is uncomplicated to become responsive to from a rod knock,in case you could experience it hitting the valve conceal then it fairly is not any longer good,it potential the rocker is all the way off,and the push rod is hitting the valve conceal,if the studs are undesirable they in all hazard wont stay tightened down whether you regulate them,i think of this guy did no longer inform you each and every little thing that replaced into incorrect with this motor vehicle, pull the conceal off and notice it fairly is not any longer a push rod hitting the valve conceal, which will reason a knocking sound, good good fortune.

Definitely needs a new motor. It's waiting to throw a rod. $1000 would probably be ok because hondas have a great resale value. Good luck
