I think you are saying what is the best fertilizer to put down to prepare the grass for winter, right???
Any of the major brands are fine....I have been a homeowner for 45 years and have used everything.....I follow the rules of three for my lawn since I mulch and every mowing puts down clippings that fertilize, rule of threes: fertilize at Easter, memorial day and labor day...makes it easy to remember. I have had great success with Vigoro, Green power, and Scott's....Vigoro has the best price and does a great job....get it at Home Depot and Lowe's for best price.
(By the way put down at least two applications of weed and feed to control the weeds*****)

Best Winter Lawn Fertilizer

Most of your fertilizing for lawn grasses is done in the active growing stages of the year. This means that one of the most important feedings of the year is the fall feeding time aka winterizer fertilizer. The contents of the fertilizer is a bit higher in potassium which aids the lawn grasses to grow deeper in the ground thereby winterizing them. Your other times of the year are going to be during the active growth cycle of the grass when you are mowing. Your county extension agent can be of a great assistance in determining the type of fertilizer for your area of the country. All garden centers will have the supply that you need.

That all depends on where you live. If you are in the southern half of the US, and you haven't experienced any frost on the ground yet, you can apply one of the winterizer type fertilizers such as "Scotts". On the other hand, if you live in a colder location and there has been freezing nights and the lawn has gone dormant for the year, it is best to wait until spring, until the lawn starts actively growing again. If you are not able to apply fert now because of the reason I stated above, it's no big deal, your lawn will not suffer from a lack of nutrients. There is enough available in the soil to carry it through the winter months. If you have to wait until spring, you can apply one of the many weed & feed fertilizers available in the garden center location at Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes. Some varieties of weeds will also be starting to grow at this time and this is a good time to control them as well... Hope this answers your question...Good Luck!

For Farms, Gardens and Lawns
Cost of fertiliser application decreases in winter dramatically when used with Ozoneem cake (Organic Fertiliser). Simultaneous application cut down the actual expense by over 50 percent as reported.
Ozoneem Cake accelerate root development and overall grass growth & protect grass from soil borne pathogens, insect, nematode, fungi and termites.
Being a Natural Botanical product it is totally safe and does not interface with the eco-friendly organisms earthworms. Infact 25% growth rate in earthworm has been reported with Neem Cake application.

I would recommend Scotts Winterguard, and if you have a weed problem I would get Winterguard Plus2. Home Depot or Lowes should still have a bag or two laying around. It will really help how quick your lawn greens up in the spring.

Scotts Weed and Feed. A little late to apply now but read the direction for temperature and conditions.

fertilising should only be done in the warmer months when growth is in its peak time, so always make sure that your lawn is well fertilised before winter so it remains strong healthy during winter months
