Hey I am nine months pregnant and expecting my water to break any day now, so I am wondering: With all the medications and sedators, will childbirth still be the most painful thing to ever happen in a woman's life?

Every birth is different, even for the same woman. Take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

You tend to hear the extremes: "It was so horrible, I thought I was coming apart" or "It's no big deal, just heavy cramps".

There are pains meds available, but it is not easy.

I have worked labor & delivery, mother-baby care, newborn nursery, and pediatrics. A couple of woman have told me that there was much more pain when they had kidney stones, then when they gave birth.

If birthing is that terrible, why are there so many repeat customers. Again, I am not saying it is easy.

Do not let anyone tell you that you are being silly. The nervousness and fear are very natural. I have worked with nurses who said they still had fears. We are supposed to know everything.

All the best to you and that little sweetheart.

I've never given birth, but something my mom always said about childbirth. She was scared to death, too, to give birth, but then she thought about it......all the billions of people here on earth. Those people didn't hatch from an egg so it's something that you will get through....don't worry. From what I've heard, the pain is instantly gone when the baby comes out. Now, whether or not that's true....I don't know.

i have had 3 kids and each labor has been different. for the first 2 i had no pain meds and my last on i was on potician and i had an epidural the last hour or so. but a lot depends on how much pain you can take and how long your labor is also. you will be amazed on what you can do when your in labor. just remember to breathe and your not the first person to give birth and the nurse's will be their to help you out with pain meds if your need it. good luck i wish you a fast and "painless" labor

That really depends on your own definition of pain. Like stated before, I have earaches that hurt worse. I had no pain meds during labor, and to be honest, it gets kind of fuzzy after, because it's just not important anymore. Stressing about it will not help you - your body is meant to manage this, and it will. Modern medicine will help if you have difficulties. I found the best thing to do was to concentrate on nothing but what was happening - I even sent my husband away. Not that he stayed away, but he was distracting. You'll be fine.

I had a c-section and I felt nothing till they took the morphine away. There are no words to describe the pain but after a week the pain had subsided. To be quite honest I had an ear infection one time that even more painful than the c-section.
