I believe it's Emergency Medical Technician. You can take a training course for it, but it's not a college major. In fact, you can do it in high school. My uncle is an EMT - I think it's all on a volunteer basis.

EMT = Emergency Medical Technician

There are levels of EMT from "basic" to "paramedic". A basic EMT (EMT-A or EMT-B) has completed a little over 100 classroom hours of training, some on-unit and ER experience. This is the entry-level and many are indeed volunteers or have other jobs where EMT certification is a requirement.

The EMT-P (paramedic) has had about two years of training in advanced pre-hospital care along with an internship in the field and in the ER. There are many things a paramedic can do in the field that even an RN can not.

This page (http://www.nremt.org/about/ems_learn.asp) from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians will provide you with much information.

EMS and Nursing (while both health care) are very different fields with differing training and education needs.
