I've decided to rad the "Mists of Avalon" series of books by Marion Zimmer Bradley. What order were they published in? Is this the same order they were meant to be read in, was there a prequel to the series published last that would be good to read first?
thanks.

The Mists of Avalon was written as a standalone; the series was later created around its popularity. So I would agree with reading it first, then going on to the series of you enjoy it - personally, I think it's one of the best fantasies I've ever read.
The prequel series can be started with Ancestors of Avalon, or even with another Bradley novel that was originally a standalone, The Fall of Atlantis - characters from the Atlantis story are put into the Avalon timeline, There are four further prequels, after Ancestors I believe the chronological sequence is Ravens of Avalon, The Forest House, lady of Avalon, Priestess of Avalon.

The Mists of Avalon was published first, then all of its various prequels. I believe there are 5 prequels now, one came out not too long ago. I would definitely start with The Mists of Avalon and then move on to the prequels. The order of the prequels is: The Forest House, Lady of Avalon, Priestess of Avalon, Ancestors of Avalon, and Ravens of Avalon. I hope you enjoy them.

Bradley, along with Diana L. Paxson, later expanded the book into a series, including Ancestors of Avalon, Ravens of Avalon, The Forest House, Lady of Avalon, and Priestess of Avalon.

Check the Bibliography page at www.mzbworks.com. It gives the order the books were written in and the historical chronology. The next book, SWORD OF AVALON, takes place between LADY OF AVALON and MISTS.

I disliked the Mists of Avalon. Be prepared to never think of the Arthurian legends the same way again. In fact that book still bothers me.
