I presume that you are looking for restaurants that are not chains. There are more restaurants in Houston than anywhere else in the country. That said, places like Macaroni Grill and Carrabas are all over the place. The really good, "one off" Italian restaurants are numerous.

A friend of mine who is Italian and in the restaurant business here said that DaMarco (on Westheimer near Mandell) is the best Italian place in the city.

Also inside the loop on Westheimer you will find Sorrento which is a little grander. And Dolce Vita which is a trattoria/oenoteca. Both are near Taft.

Simposio has great food. They just moved to a new space on Westheimer just west of Dunvale.

Osteria Antica (or is it Antica Osteria) is on Bissonnet and Shepherd. They have an intimate dining room and a beautiful deck. Only open for dinner.

Some people really like Prego, in Rice Village, just off Kirby. I think it is a little bit boring.

That should get you started. If you want some more ideas, just let me know!

Buon appetito!

DaMarco's has excellent food and a nice atmosphere.

Limited parking area, so valet parking is offered. All the dishes I've had there are superb.

It is located on 1520 Westheimer near Montrose St. Reservations are a must for wkend evenings.

I like Petranelli's off of Washington-neat family owned joint with great food . Colina's is also very good, has more than one location and is byo and reasonably priced.
For Pizza, Romano's on W Gray is fantastic for authentic thin crust NY Pizza. I am a NY pizza kind of girl and nothing but Romano's will do. The rest of their menu is great too.
Spaghetti Western in the Heights is also a good bet.

I've never been to a lot of the places that have been listed on here already, but you should try Buca di Beppo. It's off of 59 on Buffalo Speedway. They have amazing food. They serve family sized portions, so make sure that you split a meal with someone... You won't finish it alone.
