Poverty is a symptom showing the sickness of our society. Like on all fields in our society, symptoms are treated, mainly by trying to eliminate them. Hardly anybody is asking for the cause or better said 'root cause', because reasons for the symptoms are always found and in the first place on the outside, never or seldom the cause will be seen in the system of society or within oneself. Are we not each of us distributing our part to the society and with this also having part in producing the symptoms???
So the first step will be that we get out of dependencies and start to think by ourselves. Then we will be able to ask critical questions, not staying in a dumb, hypnotized or depressed condition. Then we might be motivated to search for answers that will include ourselves but not be limited to our own interests.
What I am doing to help? Knowing that the root cause for most problems in our society are coming from our attitude, habits, worldview and our human nature, I am distributing information about meditation or 'StressReleaseExercise'. We need to work on our materialistic and egoistical attitudes. But these are so strongly established, that hardly anybody is interested or open to do something about it. There is a lack of education and that is also a symptom of this society, which is stuck in it's structure, the same as the individuals, and rejecting any change and things that would be produce a change.
The only way to treat the root cause, whatever this might be, poverty, disease, depression, war, destruction of our world, etc. is to start with ourselves. As we are trapped in our personality, whatever we do is a turning around ourselves and the only way and I am very convinced of this, is to sit down and go back to ones personal root, that means relaxing and being aware of ones silence, observing ones reactions...
A detailed advice you can find at the link below. You can start right now and you will benefit from it and not only you but also the whole...

Well, it has been previously stated already that poverty will never end and that there is no real definition or whatever. and that's all true. but that doesnt mean we cant lessen the gap between the rich and the poor.

and as far as the welfare time limit/training deal. its been tried. there arent enough jobs out there. and even if someone has a steady minimum wage job, it doesnt guarantee that its enough to really support themselves/family. aka the working poor.

the most effective way i think would be to lend the really poor money, like the Grameen Bank [created by Muhammad Yunus]. often the poor are incredibly capable, they just dont have the resources to help themselves. In summary, no bank believed in Yunus' plan, so he took out a loan himself and started giving people, primarily women [it forced the husband stop beating them because they were told to say "if i am getting beat by my husband, the bank wont lend me money"], in bangladesh loans. Only the poorest of the poor could get these loans. It wasnt very much money in each loan, maybe $20 or so. And the people were expected to pay back the loan with interest. There would be a manager/collector who would collect the money that was being paid back at weekly meetings and these meetings were held in groups. If one person didnt pay back the money, the group would suffer. This allowed the people to keep each other accountable. It resulted with a 98+% payback rate, which is a huge percentage in any bank, worldwide. On top of this, the people were able to make a bit of money and provide food and other necessities for their families. They were by no means rich, but being able to get enough food to feed your family throughout the week makes a world of difference.

We sponsor poor children overseas. The organisation helps educate the children and ensure they get proper care so that as adults they can get a job and work for a living. If everyone did this, it would go a very long way to ending poverty worldwide.

Giving (preferably directly or else most if not all will never get to the poor) will improve the poor from been poor

Educating and training the poor so that he/she can strive and prosper their way out of poverty

It's the most exhilarating and confidence boosting to be able to prosper one's own way out of poverty rather than been given and taking handouts

First I learned what poverty was and how I participate in its activity. Second I learned how to discontinue my own poverty laden behavior and then how to stay away from it when I want.

Stop giving hand outs. Make people work. Look at all the trash on our streets pay them $8 an hour and have then pick it up.

Allow people on welfare for only 1 year. and during that year you train them for jobs. For women they get a once monthly birth control shot before they get there check if you miss class that time is deducted from your check.

Maybe is all the people on welfare were working we would not have the illegal immigrant problems.

There are four reasons for poverty.
Increase in population
Lack of education
Unwillingness of people to donate or help the poor.
Unscrupulous methods adopted by the rich to amass wealth.
I am working on all these fronts.
