I am a 20 year old female. I'm sexually active and want to keep it away from my parents. I've been experiencing menstrual irregularities which i assume could be due to an early miscarriage and want to visit a gynecologist for the first time. I'm under my parents health insurance so how can i keep my visits confidential?

Well, you can tell the doctor that you want this to be confidential. He can't, and won't, tell. If his office bills it as just a checkup, then that will be fine. But if you need another procedure, then when your parents get the notice from their insurance co (if the insurance co does that--some do, some don't) they may see a procedure code. No idea what that would be, but a likely possibility would be a D&C. Yet there are plenty of non-pregnancy-related reasons for a D&C, so that wouldn't cause your parents to know anything.

why don't you try a planned parenthood or a local UTMB. they are normally pretty good about these kinds of situations. and you might not have to use your insurance. they are normally very cheap and in some cases free.

BUT, you should've started going to a gyno by now. why don't you give your parents the excuse that you would like to keep your health up to date and you would like to go for your first visit. this way you could avoid giving the REAL reason. all information during your visit is CONFIDENTIAL and can not be released to your parents unless there is an emergency, specially if you make it known.

Just be honest with the doctors/nurses/etc. they hear it all the time and they are normally very helpful in keeping your visit confidential.

good luck...

If you use the insurance, they will get a report of a visit.

You obviously are not the only 20 year old with menstrual irregularity, regardless of the cause. You can just tell them that you have menstrual problems. The doctor cannot tell your parents any specifics about the visit, if they make an inquiry.

Since you are under their insurance they will more than likely get something from the insurance office. Im really surprised that you are 20 and have never been to the Gyno. before. Your shouldn't be embarrassed of it.

If you really feel like you cant even tell your mom and you are really afraid of her finding out, maybe you just shouldn't tell her. If she doesn happen to ask, you dont have to go into great details with her, just tell her you were having menstrual problems that you had not had before and wanted to make sure everything was ok.

Im sure she isn't going to freak out.

Good Luck.

If you do not want the insurance statement ( EOB or Explanation of Benefits ) to come to the house you can change your Address with the insurance Company. They will have to send your statement to the address you designate. Even with you being under your parents insurance. They are bound by confidentiality just as a Dr. is if you express to them that they should not be giving any info to your parents. They have a special name for this b/c the EOB actually comes in your name and not your parents so If you call the ins. co. they will change it.

It's not too bad. Just remember to breathe through the discomfort, if you have any. Tightening up will just make it worse. The doctor will examine the external genitalia first. Then he will insert a finger or two (don't worry, he won't use two unless he has to) and palpate (that means push down on) your belly to feel for abnormalities. Next, he may insert what is called a spectulum into your vagina to open you up, so that he can see your cervix and make sure everything is okay. That will be about it. He might examine your breasts to ensure you don't have any abnormalities there. That should be about it. It's not bad at all. Good luck!

You should already be seeing a gyno if you are sexually active. (B/c, checked for STDs, general pelvic)
By HIPPA law the doctor cannot tell your parents what went on since you are over 18.
Since they pay your insurance they will however see the bills.
There are free clinics you can go to if you are still scared of them finding out, but DO NOT jepoardize your health or that of a possible baby's health for fear of your parents finding out that you are having sex. Trust me I have the FREAKIEST parents on earth who i am now referred to as "wh*ore" and "b*tch" by because I slept with my ex before iraq and we might get back together.
So if anyone understands parents freaking out over the sex thing I do.
Take care of yourself though!
Get regular gyno care, get on b/c, checked for STDs, get a Pap every year or two (whatever your dr recommends for you).

You are too old to have never been to the gyno. Tell your parents you need to go. You are an adult. Ask your primary care physician to refer you. You need to learn to talk to your parents rather than trying to keep it the appt. confidential. But once you go what you talk to your doctor about is between you are them, your parents dont need to know why you went or what the outcome is.

It will be impossible to keep the visit from them because you are on their insurance plan. Just tell them that it was a routine checkup and inform the doctor that the visit is to be kept confidental.
