Also my girlfriend is expecting baby number 4, and has to "babysit" her mother when she is drunk, she becomes aggressive in her mannar, and will pick a fight with strangers on the streets, she has travelled 130 miles to be with her daughter for christmas, and she also has a cocaine problem

1. does she drink in private(popping into the toilet or somewhere)
2. does she deny she has been drinking
3. does she hide the empty bottles
4. does she have the shakes or more commonly known as the DT's
5. does she start early in the morning, or is it just a couple at night.

if the answer to most of these are yes then it looks like she has a problem. unless she becomes verbally or physically abusive like my stepfather it shouldnt be a problem over xmas but you're girlfriend needs to sit her down and have a chat with her and tell her she is worried about the amount or frequency of her drinking. the doctors can help those who want it but they must admit the need the help first or its a losing battle like my stepfather who drinks a 3/4 litre bottle of whisky a day now, he wont admit he has a problem and starts drinkin gas soon as he gets up.

good luck and i hope it doesnt spoil you're Xmas.

If your girlfriends mum plays up at Christmas send her on her way. If she wants to drink then that is up to her but don't let her behaviour spoil your time with your partner and your children. She is certainly behaving alcoholically which is usually a good indicator of alcoholism and when you add in the drug problem it's not good. Ring Al-Anon - they're especially there for the friends and families of alcoholics and will help you to get through things in an non-judgmental fashion. Don't let your children be affected by their grandmother's selfishness - and it is selfish because she actually chooses to drink.

sorry mate, but like all alcoholics there is nothing you can do untill they either admit they have a problem or hit rock bottom, and even then they have to want to help themseves.myself personaly i would ring her and tell her how you feel, shes got to come to terms with the fact that not only is she hurting herself by boozing the way she does, but shes now hurting her family, believe me this could be a long haul, its not anything you can just hide from cos your afraid to hurt feelings, the sooner she knows that shes on the path to hurting children and family, the quicker she will recover.and prepare yourself for a lot of lies and deception as this is the trait of an alcoholic.

Look up Alcoholics Anoymous on the net, they have loads of info for her to look at, remember you can take a horse to water but the still suffering alcoholic has an illness and has to drink until something makes them realise it has to stop...it could be that they are sick and tired of being sick and tired..
also look up Al-Anon that's a group for families of the alcoholic and how they cope with tough love and love at a distance and also unconditional love

well, as long as she isnt violent then she should be okay. but confront her about the problem after christmas, and when she's not staying with you.
