do you like them or do you think that it makes the guy look like he's trying to hard to look sophisticated? And if you do like them should you wear it with or without a scarf?

i think that its either an over coat, or a scarf, not both.
over coats are fine on men, although careful it doesn't look to feminam (my dad had one that was extremely girly that i hated)
just be careful not too look too girly with it.

my brother wears them when he wears suits and the weather is bad out. i don't equate them with sophistication. I think of them more as a practical necessity in plates where you have bad weather in the winter.
and I would say only wear a scarf if the weather warrants it.

I think men's overcoats are ok, but they look most masculine in a black overcoat.

i like overcoats, double breasted ones too. i always wear mine with a scarf but i dont think it really matters.

Soemtimes I think it looks like their trying to hide something.
It looks good on some people, however.
