Is it right for me to be trying to cut through the grime and meaningless grit that seems to be prevading over all of man's existence, and trying to find what it is that makes us human?

If its wrong, what do you suggest I focus on instead?

we, as in mankind er..gasp! humankind, have been trying to do this since day 2. Day 1 is reserved for the utter joy of being here. It is a long road you're traveling, don't take any "short-cuts". God-speed!

Gee, the "essence" was defined nearly 4 thousand years ago when someone declared us the "rational" animal.
Focus on that.

No its not wrong, but if you simply look at yourself and what makes you human, that is the answer cause that will be what makes us all human. Be happy.
