I'm atheist, and thinking of asking my girlfriend to get married. Is it legal ? If so, who would perform the ceremony?

No way dude!

You would be turned into a pumpkin if you tried it.

Seriously now, and I am not trying to be mean, but if your question is serious, I think you are not intelligent enough to get married.

Merry Christmas

In Colorado, you just have to go down to the courts and sign a marriage certificate. also, there are many non-religious people who have the legal right to perform marriage ceremonies. Call your local government office and ask what is required. Some Judges will perform the ceremony and you can ask them to do it without religious reference. Marriage is a legal act, it becomes a religious ceremony when you ask God to be involved, but you don't have to do this.

Simply have a judge or justice of the peace perform the ceremony. It's absolutely legal for an atheist to marry. You don't have to get married in a church, you can have the cermony in a garden, hotel ballroom, anywhere that can hold the number of people you want to invite. Congratulations! I hope she says yes!

Certainly it's legal. You get a justice of the peace to marry you. Call and ask your village or town clerk who that person is, and then call that office and find out what sorts of legal requirements you must meet, take care of that business, provide the documentation that will be required and make an appointment to have the deed done.

Yes, it would be a civil ceremony, and there are lots of people who do non-religious vows (including Judges and JPs). Most churches would even let you get married there if you paid their fee.

Of course. There are plenty of people licensed to marry couples who don't have any religious affiliation. The ceremony can be completely athiestic if you want :)

Go to your city hall, a judge can marry you. Although, you really need to think this through. Its hard to believe an adult would ask such a question.

a judge, notary in some states, justice of the peace. Marriage is a legal contract...not just a religious vow

The REAL question is: Is it really the year 2007 for an atheist? Time is measured by the Roman calendar, which starts in A.D., which means Anno Domini, which means "in the year of our Lord." Basically everybody goes by Christian time. It's been 2007 years since Christ died for our sins. So is it really 2007 for an Atheist? haha

There's the question for you.
