Good point. For some reason many women refuse to accept that all the fuss over unequal pay is purely about feminists trying to score political points. Someone recently posted a link to a paper on doctors' wages, saying that the pay difference proved that there was wage discrimination. However the paper stated pretty clearly that female doctors earn less than males because they tend to:
1/ work part time
2/ be in low paying specialities e.g. geriatrics rather than cardiology
3/ be employees rather self-employed
4/ see fewer patients
5/ do less administrative work
6/ take time off from work. 82% of women worked reduced hours for childcare reasons compared to 19% of men.
Its going to take a long time before the wage discrimination myth dies.

Here are some of the reasons:
Women tend to be concentrated in careers that pay less
They are often hired at lower wages than a man for the same jobs.
They generally don't get informed about management opportunities (Wal-Mart recently got into trouble for this. Most of their employees are female but very few managers are. Many of the female employees said they weren't even told)
There's a lot of age discrimination in our society. If you're over the age of 40, you're seen as being too qualified for the job or the assumption is that you're in poor health and will cost the company in insurance. The argument about maternity leave doesn't apply since most older women never take them.

Has anyone ever been able to substantiate the "lower pay for women" claim?
I have never been payed less than a man doing the same work as I.
I work long, hard, loyal, smart and efficient...I earn as much if not more than many of my male colleagues.
Sorry...men aren't worth more than women in the work force.
Production isn't based on sex...it's an individual thing, surely you know this.

Though it is true, it has more to do with women taking leave from their career for children (not just maternity leave), women wanting more flexible and less demanding jobs for children and women being less aggressive for projects and promotions. Though many women are becoming more successful in higher paying jobs, most do have children and the majority of these women leave their children their priority. As you can see, children are pretty much the main source of women being paid less.
If women were really being paid less (over all, not just select cases) there would be millions of law suits...and as ou mentioned, very few men being hired.

Despite the deceptive simplicity of introductory economics courses, there is more to hiring than wages. Wages are the outcome of many factors but hiring a specific person over another is based on perceived risk. Think of hiring like gambling. Companies hire the worker that is the best bet. If women are perceived as likely to take maternity leave, likely to take sick leave, or likely to work less overtime, they aren't as strong a bet. But like betting on a horse at a racetrack, this is a problem of perception. No one actually knows which prospective employee is the safest bet so they stereotype and guess. This is why your CV and cover letter as so important and why you have to get dressed up and make a good impression at your job interview.

because men mostly are trade union leaders. This is due to the fact that prior women hopped into industrial work, men already penetrated their power there. So, how come they want the second sex to have equal right and equal paid like they have?
Also another accusation of trade union policies to provide less paid to women who have the same position with men is to ascribe women to have ineffeciency at work due to women have other responsibilities (domestic work and more burden if they have children) to carry out. So, women are supposed to work less effecient than men because their minds are not only with work, it distracts with children and domestic work as well as husband.
why men never understand us? and often try to control us? why men often think they are hard worker, smarter... than us? why men do not think what they are doing today is because they have power that are given to them since primative society? is feminist wrong to just want to be equal with you?

They cannot just hire women because they would be discriminating men. The main reason they do not make it apparent that they hire women ( for less pay) because if they are caught through an audit, they can be forced to pay back pay, and raise wages. If you say it doesn't happen that just isn't true since in the past companies like Texaco, Xerox and CoreStates Financial, have all had to answer to the EEOC for pay discrimination. I honestly have no clue why some companies do this since it can be quite costly. They can impose punitive damages up to $300,000 per person if it can prove that a company intentionally discriminated against women...yikes right? Even the labor department cites that: "For every dollar earned by a man, women take home 74 cents" That is just a mere 15-cent improvement since the Equal Pay Act in 1963 outlawed gender-based wage discrimination. I think one way we can stop this is to make sure women and men get equal pay, by strengthening enforcement of equal pay laws.
