I started on medium and worked my way to expert. I few suggestions I'll take the liberty of offering. Use alternate strumming meaning strum up and down. It may feel awkward at first but it's an investment. Keep at it and in no time it will be second nature and you will be able to strum twice as fast. Learn to use hammer ons and pull offs. Again, at first it will be harder actually, but it's the only way to shred.

I play easy. My 10 year old son plays expert but he has been playing nonstop for a while. I get confused. But I don't get to play much with him around.
