The only thing that pruning dead wood is going to do, is eliminate that specific dead and useless branch. It will "not" cause the shrub to rejuvenate in the spring. This can only be accomplished from pruning "live" wood. It will however, make it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye and prevent an entry point for boring insect pests. If you want to rejuvenate or make the plant thicker and fuller, you must prune live wood. Hope this answers your question.

Added Info: ....If you prune rhodies this time of year, you will lose this next years blooms. Rhodies should be pruned right after they bloom (late spring, early summer).
