It wasn't super loud or anything, but it made ash and smoke come out through the blower holes. Blower wasnt on. Scared me to death! I checked everything and there was no fire (other than inside the burner). I let it go out and cooled it down to look in and its a little dirty, but not too bad. Its driving me crazy trying to figure out why it happened. Any ideas? Thanks

do you have an air tight? and what are you burning?
see ,we have an air tight wood and coal burner and I know that when we first got it I wasn't sure how to run the air flow on the bottom ,and 2 or 3 days after we had it ,I tried to build up a fire that had burned down by putting paper and small kindling on it. I shut the door and walked away, the fire didn't take off so I went back to see what was going on .I fiddled with the bottom damper and BOOM! It was power full enough to lift the top loader door up and slam it back down blowing ashes and sparks everywhere, scaring the hell out of everyone in the house.apparently it was smoldering and created a vacuum which exploded when it finally got air.
It happened one other time because we had let the ash catcher get too full and it blocked the air flow and that time no one even messed with the damper ,we've since learned how to run the dampers correctly and make sure the air flow isn't blocked when building a fire on top of coals.
hope this helps. good luck ><>

Sometimes a knot in the wood will do that. Had a wood stove now 8yrs and had it happen many times. It not to load but will make you notice.

Might have just been a pocket of moisture in the wood. As it heated up it made steam. The preasure increased and finally the pocket burst. Don't worry it's probably nothing.

It was the explosion of off gasses from the smoldering, partially burned wood. Increase your air input and open the damper a little.

This comes from heated air in the wood itself.

i could have been the chute, metal does expand and contract. the heat got to the cold chute whitch might have a dent in it and expanded it and the dent popped out.
