OMG. ok first off your computer is freezing because:
1) Too much crap on the hard drive
2) Not enough room, too many installed programs
3) Not enough ram to process what ever it is your doing.
4)computer / Laptop isn't meant for heavy anything (maybe a p2, p3, older system?)
Try Deleting some files, C:\windows\System32\Temp
and internet files, downloads, desktop items, music that you dont listen too etc.
5) personally, i would also do like 3 virus scans, just to be safe, go into safe mode to do that though otherwise it wont always see all infections, if any.
And finally, run msconfig.exe, go to startup tab, select (if you are comfortable, it will ruin your os if you screw up) and choose things that you dont need starting up, to start.
the first tab i believe has the option of "minimal startup" it will choose the ones needed my Microsoft so you dont stop something necessary to windows. hit apply, it will ask you to restart, if your done, it restart now. should boot faster. Media, such as Video, music files are loaded when you see the "xp ..Home, pro..etc.. screen, the more of these files you have the longer start up will take, and eventually when in windows explorer, so will windows. What i believe you are experiencing is laggy processing, due alot of things i mentioned above. Good luck hope it helps, you could also take it to a computer shop, like comp usa, office depot does it for 10 bucks with a coupon, they will straighten it out.

I'm going to assume you're running Windoze on a modern (>2GHz) uP. Most likely, you've got a background process using up all your idle time. When you go to screen saver, that process pretty much takes over your machine, and doesn't return to the task manager on a regular basis. In Windoze XP, this is a long-known bug related to the Windoze Update function, and there's nothing to be done about it. In Vista, who knows what grievous and unnecessary errors have been introduced. If it's not Bill Gates personally sucking up your CPU, though, it's most likely spyware or malware.
First, get a virus scanner. Several years back, before I switched to a functional OS, I used AVG Free and Kaspersky as cost-free Windoze virus scanners. If they find nothing, use Spybot S&D or equivalent to look for spyware and adware.
If you're ambitious and competent, switch to Linux. I'd recommend Ubuntu myself...it has, in my experience, the best record of working with minimal configuration. The difference between Linux and Windoze is that Windoze works straight out of the box and immediately starts deteriorating. Linux generally requires some initial manual configuration, and then works forever. In general:
IQ = Preferred OS
<80 Mac/ipod
80-105 Windoze
105-140 Linux
140+ BSD Unix
YMMV.

go to the start menu and click on run and type
"msconfig"
a window pops up and the last tab on the right will say 'startup'
click on the tab and uncheck all items on that list, that will make it so your comp doesn't start up a bunch of crap when you start windows.
restart your computer
then go to "add remove programs", in your control panel you're probably running some stuff you don't want to be running. choose to delete any programs you don't want, if you don't know what it is, google it and find out if you need it or not.

You computer may have too much space on it, you may need more memory. Try restarting your pc. Try changing your screensaver and see if thats the problem.
