Hi, i was interested in getting a dwarf bunny and i'm not too sure either to get one from the pet store or to adopt. I heard that adopting has alot of the health care issue taken cared of, Is that true? But which is a better choice?

I think adopting a bunny is better than buying one from a pet store, no doubt. If you adopt a bunny from an adoption agency, you can at least feel secure than it had a health check and they are okay for adoption, or at least you'll know if they have any health problems. If you buy one from the pet store, they can come with all sort of illnesses and the people at the pet store are not knowledgeable about animals that well. Also, a lot of animals at pet stores are inbreed, so you could never trust them. So I would definitely say, adopt a bunny for sure. This way you save a life at the same time.

Between the two I would say to adopt from a shelter. Stay away from petstore animals. They are usually bred in "mill" type settings.
Both cases have their drawbacks.
The best thing to do is to find a breeder of the breed you are looking for. They can help you with your rabbit and have rabbits to sell for reasonable prices.

Just an FYI- dwarf rabbi breeds can sometimes be territorial and tend to nip more than some other breeds. You can get more information on all the breeds at the ARBA website. Thats the American Rabbit Breeders Association-
http://www.arba.net.
It is a great organization that has members all across the USA. They hold shows almost every weekend and at the shows you find rabbits for sale.
Also make sure you have everything you need for your new pet BEFORE you get it.

Most animals from a pet store are raised in mills, where the animals welfare is not taken into consideration, its only the money that matters.
Shelters are better because you are taking in an animal that does not have a home, and your helping a little at a time in shutting down the mills.
as far as health care issues, either one you will have them. In my experience the mills actually produce more diseased/ill formed animals due to inbreeding and the conditions the animals are kept in. As long as you keep up on the shots, and health of the animal you shouldnt have a problem. if you do then just know that you gave an animal love.

eegads, not a pet store. If you buy from a pet store, you're supporting puppy mills, which are horrible, horrible things.

Pet stores charge an arm and a leg for dogs that really, really are not worth that much money. They'll also try to pass off dogs for things that they're not... such as, labelling anything that might be purebred as "AKC" when really it's just a really poorly bred whatever that had a cousin twice removed who was actually registered. It's way way better to go and adopt a dog from a shelter. Cheaper, you're saving a life, etc.

Petsmart's cats are fine, though... those aren't products of kitten mills or anything, they're just cats from shelters that truly need homes and their adoption fees are reasonable.

I will always recommend adoption from an animal shelter vs. buying an animal from a pet store. Rabbits rarely get adopted from an animal shelter, so it would be nice if you could save a bunnies life and give him a good home. You can visit your local animal shelter to see what they have available, or you can search for a rabbit in your area on http://petfinder.com

Pet stores often get their 'pets' from mills... Those that breed without care or condition of the product.
Shelters is where most of these 'products' end up.
Best of adopt from a shelter, and stop the flow from the store.

Heres the deal:

I know that buying a DOG atleast from a store can be risky... You have to be sure to make sure they treat them correctly, make sure they're not malnourished all that stuff... They have buildings that all the dogs are used for are breeding, they're mistreated and stuff... I could only assume the same is for a rabbit. If you're going to purchase from a store like Petco or something similar, sure, that should be safe.

Otherwise, I prefer the shelter because I know a lot of shelters, at least by me, if they run out of room, the only option left is to euthanize the critter... because they need the space...

Hope this helps!

I'd never buy an animal from a pet-store, they are unhealthy.
A lot of them get their dogs from puppy farms.
Either go to a breeder, so you see the mother & conditions,
or go to a rescue or humane shelter, & get a vet check.

the dogs from the pet store come from puppy mills. if you dont know what puppy mills are you should research about them but in short summary they are horrible places that dogs get breeded over and over again. i think its better to adopt because you are giving the animal a second chance. and it's a very good reward...if you choose animal shelter...go to www.petfinder.com its VERY helpful...see for urself

If you can find one, adopt....it will most likely save their life. SOME shelters will tend to small health issues, but not the larger ones...either way you go, there will be health issues to tend to, so if possible adopt.
