I mean a father plays catch with his son but how often does he play catch with his daughter? Do girls these days suck at sports because society puts to much pressure on them to be feminine or is it something else?

Just so you know I mean girls not women who play sports professionally.

I didn't say girls weren't allowed to play sports i said why aren't they encouraged as much as boys are these days it seems the media tells girls that they all need to be cheerleaders.

and i would ask my dad to play catch with me to improve my softball skills he would rarely play with me but if my brother asked it would always be absolutely lets go right now. Also I am really into baseball and i watch the games and follow my teams my boyfriend always makes fun of me and tells me I am a girl shouldn't i be shopping or something? Truth be told I hat shopping i find this to be gender discrimination brought on by our society's idealistic views of the way women "should" act look and be. Why can't women do whatever they want even if that includes PROFESSIONAL SPORTS!!!

It varies from family to family. I was an athletic child and I'm thankful that my family encouraged me in my pursuits. I played softball and my father and grandfather would take me out to the park and play catch with me. My mother didn't take an active part in this since she hated sports, but never discouraged me.

There are a lot of girls teams in softball, soccer, basketball, etc., so I'm thinking there are more parents encouraging their daughters than you might think.

Girls are not, well, encouraged to play sports as much as boys are encouraged. It is may be for this reason that the boys will start playing with girls.

Because typically (there are exceptions) women dont have as much of an interest in sports as guys. Yes, some girls are very athletic, and some guys and not athletic, but the majority of girls have no interest, and therefore it isnt pressured

Rickster, a lot of boys DON'T LIKE SPORTS but they are pushed into playing them by their fathers, who then try to re-live their youth through them. For many men, having a son who would rather study ballet or read literature is a major embarrassment to them.

In my family it is just whatever the interests of the girls are.
The boys play sports with them if they are interested.
I tried to encourage my girls to be interested in sports but they didn't want anything to do with it.
Two of my nieces went to college on volleyball scholarships and one is a coach now. They played every sport that came along as did their other sister and two brothers.

A number of reasons. Boys tend to be more geared psychologically towards sports, though girls who are, generally get similiar treatment. It's largely tradition as well.

Now that's not really true, we have a fairly popular female basketball team here. As well as soccer, softball, and volleyball. They may not be encouraged as much as boys, but not discouraged.

Me:

There is a professional woman's league in almost every major sport. They simply are not popular b/c they are much inferior to the men's leagues. And no women is ever going to be good enough to play on the men's professional teams. That is simply a fact.

Although this may be rude to say but guys are naturally better in sports than girls... BUT that does not mean that girls can't beat guys in sports...

Because bit by bit they are taking sports out of the mix.

Seriously.....most Americans suck at sports today......can't crush your psychies by saying you suck and need to try harder.....you might feel bad about yourselves if you don't get the Super Bowl ring the first time out. Everybody is supposed to feel good about themselves.....doesn't matter if you have no talent....

Tell me please.....seriously....what are you not allowed to play today as a woman? When I was young......there WAS NO FEMALE teams. The fact you have one says something. It's YOUR job to take it to the next level.....NOBODY needs or has to kiss your butt any further now. Pick it up and run or fold and fail. You got your chance. Quit whining now.
