It's a small town of about 60k population as well as a college town. A girl showed up missing last week and I have been worrying about her/the murderer constantly. 2 hours ago the police announced they found her body in the crawl space (makes you think.. how reliable are these people? they don't know how to thoroughly investigate the scene??)

What would you do? Would you move?

My best friend lives 1 block from the crime scene.

Well, you should always be cautious and take sensible precautions for your safety.

That said, there is no reason to take any special precautions just because you live in the proximity of the crime, unless the police announce that you are dealing with a serial murderer or serial rapist. If this is a "normal" murder, then the killer is either in hiding or on the run. Committing another murder, just for the heck of it, is probably the last thing on his mind.

Murders will happen at a given frequency in the population, just like lightening strikes. Just because one has happened in your area doesn't mean the area is all of a sudden more dangerous. It is probably no more or less dangerous than it always was.

Would you move away from the area simply because lightening had struck a house near yours? Of course not. The fact that lightening has struck once does not make it more or less likely that it will strike again.

But just like lightening, even though it is "random", there are steps that anyone can take to avoid making themselves a victim. Just like you don't stand in a pool in the middle of a thunder storm, there are certain sensible precautions you can take to drastically reduce the chances that you will be a victim of any kind of crime. The simplest and most important of these is to learn to be aware of your surroundings and observe the people around you. Learn to get an accurate "feel" for your surroundings and the people in them.
You can carry a weapon of some kind if you like, but remember that if you master the habit of observation, chances are you will never need a can of OC or mace. If you do not, then all of the cans of mace in the world will not protect you from the myriad types of trouble you can get into.

As far as the dead girl, take reasonable precautions until the killer is caught (or it becomes clear that he is no longer in the area), and don't think that just because "lightening has struck," that there is suddenly danger everywhere.

If I were you, I would move. If for some reason you can't move, make sure to properly lock your windowns and doors when you are home alone. Keep pepper spray in your purse. Make sure to have a cellphone with you in case you have to call the police. Try to have somebody with you to keep you company because murderers always like their victim to be alone. For example, have your boyfriend, husband, friend, family members with you. Always be cautious. On your door, have one of those tingy circular glass things that you can see the person standing at the door.

Set up a support group to make sure you always walk in the street after dark with at least two maybe three people. You can coordinate time schedule and carpool.

Also carry pepper spray and if your local law allows it, you can carry a taser. Check your local law FIRST though.

Please don't use my opinion as legal advice. It is MY opinion only.

find out a lot more about what exactley happened. you would really have to wait longer to find out if it's worth moving for or not, because you don't necessarily know it's a murderer yet.

im really sorry about what happened. )=
