While it is true that internships are more common in college, there are companies which hire high school students, and your excellent GPA (congratulations!) and leadership experience would seem to make you an ideal candidate. You might think about what kind of experience you would be interested in - it would be different if you plan to be a physician or if your goal is to work in business. That will provide some guidance. Then talk to teachers or your counselor, or even your parents or friends' parents about how to approach this. You are fortunate to be in the Chicago area, because there are a lot of corporate and organizational headquarters there, so they are more likely to hire interns than would be the case in other parts of the country. If you don't know of anyone who can help, feel free to email me. I'm in L.A., but I still have a fair number of contacts in Chicago from my days in grad school at Northwestern. I might be able to find someone who can help you if I knew what you wanted.

The Government has great internships, and they pay really well, too. I have worked for the federal government while in high school. If they don't have any places in Chicago that interest you, I am sure the state and city governments will also have internship opportunities.

Mostly internship is for undergrad who need such experience which relate to their major to make their resume/applications sound more competitive when applying to a grad school or job. If you'd like to have some work experience, I think you can try parttime job.

Talk to your academic adviser. S/he should know which companies have an internship program affiliated with your school.
