You are thinking of salmonella. ANY reptile can carry it.
It is easy to avoid, simply wash your hands after handling reptiles.

Water turtles are more likely to carry it because they live in contaminated water. Land turtles are less likely.
In actual fact, most turtles in clean habitats, water or land, do not carry enough Salmonella to be dangerous to anyone other than children putting the turtle directly in their mouth.

All turtles (most reptiles) carry salmonella. period.
I think the only pet that has no know decease that can be transmitted to human beings are Hermit Crabs. I don't think they carry any diseases.

Yup - any reptile is a carrier, but you're more likely to catch salmonella from grocery store chicken than you are to get it from a reptile. As mentioned - good hygiene...:-)
