HP reccomends that on a laptop with 4GB RAM, that Vista 64-bit should be used opposed to 32-bit as you will get more performance out of the 64-bit OS. Why is this? And for $160.00 extra is it worth it to upgrade to 64-bit? There are still some drive issues with different software, I know, but is it a good idea to get the 64-bit?

I have said this on here before, and I will say it again, IF YOU DON'T KNOW, DON'T ANSWER.

First off, as to the whole don't get Vista because it is buggy thing, that line has reached the point of absurdity considering how many updated MS has put out, Vista is perfectly stable.

As for 64 bit, 32 bit programs WILL run in a 64 bit OS, period, so don't listen to that. The only issue will be drivers, and those issues will be few and far between. Is it worth it, well as others have said, you can only use about 3 - 3.5 GB on a 32 bit OS, while you can use the whole 4GB in 64 bit, so if you plan to pay the extra for 4GB of RAM, you need to pay the extra for a 64 bit OS to use it. I would guess that the $160 price difference is also for a better version, and not just for 64 bit.

64 bit is the future and it does improve system performance because it is capable of holding more then 3 or 4 gigs of ram while 32 bit windows would only support 3 or 4 gigs of ram max. However I wouldn't recommend getting vista. If you are not a power user then it won't matter if you get 64 bit or 32, you would hardly notice the difference.
With 64 bit versions of windows though you might be limiting yourself on what programs you can use as some are only meant to run in a 32 bit enviroment.

The 64 bit OS is able to access all 4gb or ram, where a 32 bit OS will only see about 3gb. Is it worth the upgrade, I say no. 64 bit drivers are still not up to par with the 32 bit ones. It will be more trouble than it's worth.
