If I were a stay at home mom, I would love to sit by the fireplace knitting a sweater for Uncle Joe. But, times have changed. We all work hard for the money to sustain the lifestyle we've chosen. People don't have the free time they used to and the free time they do have is best spent with spouse and kids. Sometimes I wish we could turn back time. Maybe spend Christmas with The Waltons?

Oh I'm so with you on this. Everyone these days seems to try to out do everyone else on the spending front it's crazy. My husbands auntie never had a lot of money and when my four kids were small she never forgot them at Christmas and used to make her own little hand-made gifts for them. Those presents meant more than anything else to us because so much thought and love went into them. I don't mind spending money but you're right half of it just gets pushed to the back of the drawer after Christmas and ends up in the Charity shop by Easter, might as well just give the money to charity in the first place half the time. Thanks Larry for giving me a chance to have a moan too. Have a good Christmas hope you don't get too much junk!

It is not strange that Christmas Day is often turned into a downer by some people. In reality, the joy of Christmas is supposed to be the joy of the coming of Jesus Christ into the world to be a sacrifice for the sins of mankind. It is a time of hope and people who understand that the true spirit of Christmas is the gift of the love of Jesus and His call for us to love one another do not find it necessary to stress out themselves of anyone else on that day, which the world observes as his birthday. People frequently elevate money over people and physical gifts over spiritual gifts, not only at Christmas but every day in the year. That is unfortunate.

I don't see anything wrong with hand-made gifts.
It means someone has put thought into the gift and not just dashed into a shop and flashed the plastic.
Some people say they don't have time to make things, and yet they are don't think twice about fighting the traffic and crowds for hours at a time to get their shopping done.
They could be doing all their preparations in small amounts over a period of months and by Christmas sit back and relax at home.
I do hope you have a wonderful Christmas even though you say you hate it.

Now Im a college student and a musician. Every year i write piano pieces for my family and they love it (at least i hope so)!!! Anyway good luck and if u decide to give any home made gifts im sure everyone will love it just as much.

Even better...why don't we skip the gifts COMPLETELY? I know I don't need another (whatever) I end up opening on Christmas! I And the things I do need...like socks, underwear and new sheets...I would rather pick those out myself! And the people that get be food/candy/nuts...I just THROW THEM AWAY! I don't need it.
And it is painful to go out and Christmas shop for others...they most likely aren't going to like what I pick and will end up tossing it. So what is the point?
Why can't we all just get together as a family and have a meal and all be nice to each other and get along for a few hours. Who need gifts?
Last year I got my husband new undies cause he needed them and he got me a small window bird feeder....I loved it! This year? I think we are getting each other nothing! Yea!!!!

There is no reason that you can't make it a rule among your immediate family that all gifts have to be hand made. It's a tough one to enforce, especially if you have children. You can also set a limit on the amount spent for each child, family, friend etc. I used to be guilty of paying for Christmas long into the next year.
Merry Christmas!

I totally agree with you-I don't want the stuff, it usually ends up in my already overstuffed attic. As a good friend of mine says "If I can't spend it or eat it - then I don't want it!"
