He passed away in 1997, and my mom has no idea what rank he was, or how active he was. I'm not even sure if there was a central lodge he attended in Atlanta, or a smaller one in Decatur. Do masons keep records on old members?

Contact the Grand Lodge of Georgia, if he was a mason they'll have it in their records.

you cand find the Decatur Lodge from this site too; their secretary might be able to help if he attended that Lodge.

to some other responses:

* you can tell anyone you want that you are a mason, almost everyone who knows me knows I'm a mason

* masonry is not secret/secretive

* you might have to prove your relation to your grandfather, but if you can do that they will let you know

* good advice --- if you still have anything of his you might be able to find a dues card

If he was active, he probably attended a lodge in Decatur. If you can't find his dues card which will tell you in what lodge he was a member, feel free to contact the Grand Lodge of Georgia, which should have his membership information.

If he lived in another state for any length of time he may have joined there. Just search for Grand Lodge of to find their contact information.

As a family member, I'm sure they would be willing to share his Masonic History with you. Masonry is a society with secrets not a secret society.

Below is the link to the Grand Lodge of Georgia.

Yes, in my lodge we keep detail records. your mom should look in his wallet to see if he has a dues card that should tell you which lodge and if he was Prince Hall or York Rite mason. Once you have that info then you enquire about his status. If that doesn't work ask his close friend(s) I am sure he had friends in the same lodge he associated with.

Of course she knows nothing, because he didn't tell her anything about it. You will not have access to the records, it's a closed society.
