I love the stuff! Do you know of any good composers who can satisfy my needs?

You will find plenty of depression, despair, misery and pathos in parts of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor Op. 74 , the Pathetique.

If it doesn't bring your mood way down then nothing will !!

Musician, composer, teacher.

I think Ballade No. 1 by Chopin is deeply depressing and moving, and it was used in the World War 2 movie, The Pianist. Some people like Erik Satie's Gymnopaedies, but I can't stand it.

try Barber's Adagio for Strings it's a beautiful piece in a romantic style. Barber was a 20th century composer, this piece is very emotional. try the 2nd movement of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto. Tchaikovsky had to leave his native Russia during his life, this was a depressing time him and the 2nd movement is very depressing. the other movements are exqusite as well.

All of the pieces above are beautiful AND moving AND depressing! But I have one personal favourite:

Gregorio Allegri's Miserere Mei.

It's sumptuous, delicious, beautiful, and depressing at the same time. Except when it ended. Then I'd play it again.

If you're willing to learn a little Italian, Puccini can't be beat.
When I was in high school, I listened to Puccini whenever I was depressed and needed a good catharsis.

Someone already mentioned "Madama Butterfly."
"La Boheme" is also good.
