Nortons is pure garbage. They are only good at skilled marketing. Plus if you ever decide to remove the program, you are left with over 375 fragments of Nortons/symantec glued to your registry, files/folders and subsystem. This causes serious conflict with your system.. And you will play total hell, trying to remove them.

Avast is free an is light years ahead of Nortons. You get a real time background scanner that really kills in real time virues hidden or embedded in webpages. Plus you will get on the hour updates.

Norton is a piece of crap. Its a system resource and money hogger.
I use to have it and it took a LOT of my system resources.
Avast is WAY more effective, takes up less resources, and updates by itself in the background
AND its free

Neither. Use Nod32 ( http://eset.com or Kaspersky antivirus (http://kaspersky.com ).
If you want a good free antivirus (but not as good as Nod32 or Kaspersky) go with avg ( http://grisoft.com ).
