The question presumes that Bush could even "go it alone" and initiate a first strike. I pray that no man ever had that much power that all he has to do is say "go" and we do his bidding without question.
If the situation presented itself that the actions of the chinese government constituted a "clear and present danger" to the United States, it's citizens, territories or properties and diplomacy failed, the option of force must be considered.

Even today, I don't believe that Bush can initiate a war without a consensus. He certainly couldn't initiate a war without going through the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Pentagon.

You act like saving American lives isn't a good reason to do things. Isn't it? I mean if Bush came to us saying China will kill millions of Americans because X, Y and Z, and we need to stop them, and he had the facts to back him up, wouldn't you support stopping the Chinese from doing so? Or aren't American lives worth saving?

They would kick the bejesus out of us. Our army isn't big enough to take over China. He would have to be locked up in a padded room to even consider something like that. But I'm sure alot of Republican water carriers would be standing up for such an insane idea.

I would if there was a good reason -- for instance, they "borrow" a nuke from North Korea (or "find" their own), "accidentally" point it to the east, and "forget" how to deactivate the launch and targeting systems.
