I bought my sister a black mystery snail a month ago from petsmart and it was very active and seemingly healthy and lived in a tank with 3 but now 2 guppies and was fine but now all of a sudden it hasn't moved at all for the past 2 days! it was doing this earlier a week or so ago but moved only a little bit but now it won't move at all! any guesses or ideas what is wrong with it! we thought that it might not be getting enough food because of the other fish so we put in another little bowl alone with some food but still nothing! please help! i know it's just a small 60 cent snail but it means so much to my baby sister and i don't want her to be sad especially not with christmas coming up so please help me. happy holidays!

I have mystery snails in my aquarium too. Sometimes they do retreat into their shells for a day or two, but then pop out later, perfectly ok. If the snail doesn't come out in another 4 or 5 days though, you might have a problem. It's unlikely to be a lack of food that would have effected it this way - if the fish are not being underfed, then your snail will be getting their leftovers. Snails don't eat that much.
If the water of your tank is not heated, this could be the reason it's inactive. Snails are very active in warm water (mine are out all the time, as the water is heated). In cold water they will be much less active, and spend more time in their shells.
Keep an eye on it - and if you don't see any activity in a few days, you might need to invest in another one!

There are a lot of variables (chemicals in the water, soap residue, wrong food, etc) that could be affecting your snail's health. Your best bet is to call Petsmart to see if they can offer some suggestions on things you can try to help it get better.

Also, if you're ever looking for anything else to add to your tank, I've had a lot of luck with African Dwarf Frogs (they can stay in water all the time and stay pretty small - I don't think they'd eat your guppies).

Good luck!

try feeding it live fish like baby guppies.
