If you can see wonderful potential in a person that is of course a great thing, but there would be little point in being with someone simply because you thought that they COULD be wonderful.
For eg, one of the biggest moans people have about failed relationships is how that person 'just wouldn't change'. They are coming from the point of view of 'what they would become', which is obviously disastrous.

Always love someone for who they are.
Who knows what any of us will become?

If you love a person for who (s)he could become rather than what (s)he is, you are being extremely unfair to that person and setting yourself up for a well-deserved disappointment.

How can you love a person for who they'd become, if you just don't know for sure? I'm no psychic.

My mom has often said, "Never fall in love with a man's potential", because there's no promise they'll meet it. So I try to chose to be with people based on who they aready are. Excellent question.
