I am straight so i wanted to ask anyone who is gay how they felt about the word "gay" and "F-g" mostly the f word used in a sense like.
someone saying "oh thats gay"
"shut up ya F-G"
"this is gay"
"don't be such a F-G"
stupid sayings like that. I am guilty of saying stuff like that sometimes but never knew if it effected people who were gay.
These sayings are probably heard more around school then anywhere else. Thanks for your feed back it will help me alot

Even as a gay person myself, I am guilty of using those words in those sentence like "thats so gay" ...only because it gets stuck in your head coz u hear it around u but I do try to change it and use LAME instead and now i very rarely would say gay but most of the times i use LAME...and i usually do correct my friends if it comes out and they appologize and change their words. :)

It's pretty insulting because the f word is an ugly taunt used to abuse people and using the word "gay" to describe something in a negative way reinforces the underlying assumption that homosexuality should be viewed negatively.
To say "oh, I didn't mean it to be homophobic" doesn't wash. The fact that these words are used in this way is homophobia in itself.
When people ask me this I always suggest that they try putting a racial slur in place of the f word or gay and see how uncomfortable that makes them feel - and whether they would do it when there was someone of that racial group present.

I can't speak for everyone, but I myself really dislike those words. They are designed to hurt us. To make us feel bad about being what we are. I assure you the majority of us are perfectly respectful people, with normal jobs, normal lives. We don't hurt anybody, we lead quiet lives and live amongst everyone else. Those words are hateful, as sure as blacks find the n word hateful. As sure as Jewish people hate the word "Kike". We are use to them, I assure you. This is not a perfect world and we hear them all the time. But the world would be a far better place if people learned not to use them, even if it's one person at a time!! :@)

I try not to take offense, people are just so used to seeing the word gay as negative. If I hear it from someone i know I remind them that I am gay and to be mindful of those around when they speak.

Well i hear it heaps at my school but most of the time its not used for someone who's acting or is gay, it just seems to be the next range of insults in general being used by people, although i don't use those particular ones

ok, they have about the same effect as someone saying this:
Oh, that's so ghetto
Shut up, ya n*gger!
This is ghetto
Don't be such a n*gger
Yes--it is EXTREMELY offensive. You wouldn't be tossing around the n-word at school, now would you?
***Apologies to those this post offended--I was merely trying to make a point***

I don't mind someone saying something is "gay" - I say it myself sometimes - but it's hard to imagine a context where the "F" word would be appropriate; unless you're in the UK and need a cigarette!

to be honest in my opinion is that i do not mind. i really do not see it as anything negative. to me it is like saying that we have became a lifestyle and part of mainstream. but on the other end some homos actaully find it quite distrubing and will not want to hear it. so i guess it is really depends on the people you say it around b/c alot of people apoglize when i am around i tell them i know they are not saying it as a hurtful remark but a way to describe something.

As far as I know, using the word "gay" to mean "stupid" went out of fashion back around 1999. If you know anybody who still uses it, they are very behind the times. Do you live in a small town in the middle of nowhere? Seriously, I haven't heard that in years.

to me at least, it all depends on what YOU mean of the word. I'm blk and a friend of mine use to call me ***** (as he did everyone else) and it didnt offend me. Until one day i asked him wut HE really meant by the word and he told me. From that day on, i told him str8 out that '*****' was out of the question. We're still friends, but without the word ***** this time. I (again speaking for MYSELF), don't get offended by fag, or gay (I'm bi), and I don't think anyone should. but to everyone their beliefs and offensive, and I respect that to the uttermost. I wouldn't recommend using them tho, as it may offend A LOT of people. I may just be a rare exception, so be careful.
