ok i dont know if this is legal but i just got for christmas a motorolla walkie talkie it has 22 chanells or w.e its called and what not but i want to know how do i know what channel the police in fairfax couty virginia use? so i can listen to their radios but not communicate with them you know just listen idk if this is legal though ... my dream is to become an fbi agent so i guess i think stuff like this is coo

I doubt they would be on the same type of frequency as the cops are using, you probably have some FM channels on the walkie talkies, and those guys are probably in the VHF range somewhere, or maybe UHF. You can probably get a scanner to work in that range, but not a transmitter. I think the frequency you would need the cops are obligated to tell you, but don't bet on it.

to answer your question about is it legal to listen to a police scanner; yes you can and it is legal to listen to fairfax county police call, I down loaded a police scanner on my cell phone; and I listen all the time. I want to be a lawyer but I listen to the police scanner cause I have two teenage children and they drive and I want to make sure the police haven't stop them for any unlegal activity and to make sure that the area that they are driving to is safe and no road blocks, or accidents. My two teens are not into any illegal activity but their passenger maybe and forgot to tell the driver, and that can cause alot of trouble with the law.

I suspect that your radio is FRS or GMRS and will not be able to pick up the cops...
