Then why in the debates do Republicans argue who is most conservative and dems argue that they are the least liberal?
Because conservatism wins every time.

Because liberals know that Americans reject liberalism. The dirty little secret is 60% of Americans are conservative and would vote that way. They do not all define themselves as such.

Because only half of the people who are eligible to vote actually show up to the polls. It's well known that the US is more liberal than conservative, and the more people you get to vote the more likely you are to get a liberal victory. It's just that most people are too busy to get out and vote, and other times conservatives try to block people from voting with tactics like voter caging and intimidation.

1. That's dumb
2. That was a rumored practice of both Dems & Repubs from like 50 years ago
3. Republicans have been doing this stuff recently and even using the DOJ to politicize voters rights.

Is arguing over who's health care plan covers the most people conservative? That's strange. I guess you'll find out the hard way in November when the Republicans get drubbed.

CONSERVATISM: "A political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change." *

LIBERALISM: "A political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of man, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties." *

Conservatism doesn't win everytime, nor does liberalism. The only 'winners' are those radio 'talk show' mouthpieces who brainwash people into attaching artificial labels to themselves. The frantic Franken and lunatic Limbaugh 'media darlings' who laugh all the way to bank as they brainwash people into subscribing to what they're led to believe is a distinct and unique political dogma. The truth is that liberals and conservatives are not all that different. Franken and Limbaugh have cashed in on creating hatred, bias, lies, arrogance, ignorance, bigotry and political prejudice that only further serves to divide Americans. Too bad we don't join together to fight the 'real enemy', which is a monopolistic, corrupt two-party political system that doesn't allow voters any real choices of candidates, and helps to maintain the "Republicrat" stranglehold on our electoral process.
I don't know a conservative who doesn't want his political and civil liberties protected, nor do I know a liberal who doesn't want social stability. We've been suckered in by the Frankens and the Limbaughs of TV and RadioLand whose job it is to pontificate the propaganda, spread the political manure and keep us fighting amongst ourselves, ensuring that nothing changes and politics remains 'business as usual'.
As Adolph Hitler once said: "How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think."

Depending on the source Americans are: 30-50% Conservative, 15-25% Liberal and around 30% Independent or Undecided. To win in an election you have to cater to the majority. Nationwide, Dems move to the center and GOP candidates move further right. But there are exceptions- Blue States. In your average East coast/West coast effeminate liberal states- even the right runs left. Its sad that they cant stand up for whats right instead of doing whats convenient.

Every study that has ever been done show that the overwhelming majority of Americans support Liberal programs and policies if they aren't told they are liberal.

It's just brainwashing by the corporate apologists.

The terms Conservative and Liberal mean nothing in this country anymore. They are just meaningless names hurled as insults in debate when the politicians/pundits can't come up with specific substantive reasoning.

Liberalism is obsolete. I learned that after I got old enough to have an understanding of our political system.
