...open programs up, such as Microsoft Excel and/or MS Word, be able to perform operations within that program, and do it all in an automated fashion? I'd like to write an executable or something that could open a text file, copy all the text, close the text file, open MS Excel, paste the text, plot the text (assuming it's data), save the excel file, close excel, open MS Word, paste the data in Word, save the file, close the file and Word.

Will Visual Basic do this? Create like a visual basic script?

(I just want to know what software to use do do this, not specifically the instructions I need to implement the automated list above.)

You should be able to do that with a VB script, ugly hack of a process but doable I would think. It's been several years since I've played with VB scripting.

Alternately you could probably do some macro in Office that would cut out a few steps, but I'm not that familiar with MS products anymore.

Ideally this would be done completely at the file level without opening Excel and Word at all. But since the file formats aren't open that's pretty much out. You could do something like that at the file level probably quite easily with OpenOffice and then just convert to MS formats. But then in the time it would take to go that route it might be faster to just throw together an ewwy VB script. :)

Yes. Visual Basic 6.0 can do this for you. I once wrote an application that parsed information from Excel into a tabular format for a job interview. I did it using VB 6.0. You will need to get familiar with MS Jet Engine.

yeah, VB will do all of this! the best way to do it for an amateur is to got ot Tools > Macros > Record new Macro and do it for one file, the Record Macro and it should do the same for the rest.

(NOTE: I DONT use microsoft word so may be slightly wrong with the instructions)
