Columbus was certainly a greater explorer & the better at sea-craft.
Armstrong is a brave man, as all the Mercury, Geminii & Apollo Astronauts were/are, but they all had the full backing & technically expertise of the richest, most powerful country on Earth backing them. Thsoe men were, as brave as they were/are, the very public top of the pyramid & many of them would be the first to say the same. (Actually I've seen a number of interviews & they all HAVE said this).
Columbus, on the other hand, got three small, second hand ships & through the sheer force of his personallity & the promise of vast riches was able to recruit enough men to go with him, even though his math was way off. (Columbus had calculated the Earth's circumfernce at 16,000 miles, even though the Greeks had accurately calculated it to within a 100 miles 17 centuries earlier.)
The Apollo astronauts could see the moon.
Columbus couldn't see his destination, he went sailing based on some wonky math & the theory that the ocean on the China's east coast was the same as the one on Europe's west coast. (He was wong on both counts).

If you think about what they found, you have to give the nod to Christopher Columbus. Columbus found the Western hemisphere with two continents full of land and riches for the world to populate.
Nothing against the courage of Neil Armstrong and his fellow astronauts, but we already knew the moon was there. And after we visited a few times, we stopped going back. It is not a very useful place for people - no places for excess population to live - - no food, no water, no . . . . AIR.

I'd say Armstrong as we KNOW he did something spectacular, but no one in our life time our that of our parents or grandparents have any first hand knowledge on Columbus' true story. A lot of controversy as to if he even discovered is still in effect today. But Columbus is more popular as more people have heard of him than Armstrong.

After Columbus visited America there was a steady stream of Europeans to the America's. The New world would never be the same.
After Armstrong visited the moon less than 12 people fallowed him and none stayed.
Columbus altered the destiny of 2 continents while Armstrong's visit to the moon changed nothing.

Well, Neil Armstrong was only the first man by dumb luck of the flight rotation and the flip of a coin prevented Buzz Aldrin from being first. Not to mention all the engineers who designed the spacecraft, the flight plan, etc.
Columbus had the luck of running into the West Indies, but was too stupid to realize what it was even after 3 later trips. He at least did it by sheer will & abilities to navigate.

Neil Armstrong. He didn't masscare any of the natives. Columbus didn't really discover America, the natives were already inhabited the place and had a strong civilization just before the European explorers arrived in the New World.

Christopher Columbus sailed in search of a short cut to india, instead he discovered a vast new continent, unknown to the western world at the time. This led to the European nations exploiting the natives and claiming the land as their own. Neil knew where he was going, and was the first one there. Luckily, he was the only one there.

At least Neil Armstrong arrived at his planed destination
worth pointing out Columbus never actually set foot on mainland America, the nearest he came was the Bahamas, probably the small island of Plana Cays. He made his crew swear on oath that,if asked, they would say they reached India. He remained convinced until his death that he'd reached Asia
