Is there any GOOD lawyer? That aside, you don't tell us engought to know if you have a ligitimate gripe or not. In some states (Texas is one) a contract can be a verbal agreement, so here you would have a hard time proving you didn't have a contract in the first place.
As for suing him - ask yourself first, "Why did I hire him in the first place?" If you hired him to keep you out of jail and he lost in court - if ya' can't do the crime, the don't do the crime.
If you hired him for some sort of civil action and he lost - you would still have a hard time proving malpractice (that's what they charge medical doctors with, by the way - not lawyers).

I would send him lots of paper work requireing him to recount every second of "what" work he was doing for you and by what authority. I would not pay him, I would ignore him
I asked a lawyer to represent me in a class action suite and he laughed at me. He said he would and I signed papaers, but he never did a thing about it. sixs months passed and the case had a deadline, so I hired another firm who was specifically handling this type of case. When the former lawyer saw how much money was in a trust fund to handle the case load he tryed to write me and act like he was representing me. He never had any of the papers I had collected for the lawyer.... so I ignored him. He tryed so hard to get him hand in my case, after the fact. I ignored him and he went away.
You did not give enough to really help you with the case, so it depends on if he did or did not do anything.

You might contact your local or state bar association for advice or to file a complaint.
You said he was your lawyer, so you must have had some contact with him. He can probably charge you for office visits and time he spent on your case, even if you were not satisfied with results.

it rather isn't any longer a completed deal until you sign an settlement or verify from the coverage organization. remember that in case you hearth your lawyer and have a signed settlement with them you're to blame for his or her time and expenses linked with the lawsuit.

It depends on what you hired him for, and what you mean by not doing his job. You could take him to small claims court and sue him for false representation, it's up to you if you want to pay him/her, but he/she may come after you civily. Good Luck :)

Good luck...it's an LAWYER! He will bankrupt you if you don't pay. So if you decide to fight the payment...just file bankruptcy now.
