Not to my knowledge, but you can covert AVI into what you need with a program called Vidora iPod Converter. Google it and download it and install it.

I believe no i know.

The ipod only recognise and only play MP4 which is the specific file format for ipods.

If you have a .avi file and you want to put it on your ipod, this will need to be converted into the MP4 format, there are many programs you can use to do this.

MP4 for videos that is, are the only type that can be used.

I do not know what files can it play besides mp4 files. I download Cucusoft iPod Video Converter Suite to help me. It can convert almost all kinds of DVD and almost all video files including DVD, vob, DivX, XviD, MOV, rm, rmvb, MPEG, WMV, AVI, dvr-ms, etc. to iPod video (MP4 format). It's fast, easy and very wonderful. You can go to download it to help you too.
I downloaded it at http://www.mp3-to-ringtone.com/download/ipod-video-converter-suite.html
