My computer is Windows Xp home and worked fine for a few years......

Okay, so a few days ago a strange dot appeared on my desktop.. turns out this was some kind of adware and every single time I put the mouse over it, a bunch of Internet Explorer windows open up.. so annoying! So, I tried to get rid of this and installed Kaspersky anti virus.
BIG MISTAKE!
The minor virus turned into a huge headache because after it was done installing it required me to restart -- i did that and guess what? NOW.. when i start the computer and log in. ALL THAT COMES UP .. is my wallpaper. No icons, start, etc, etc.

What is going on?
I have the windows xp CD, but i cant find the SERIAL KEY or something like that for it so i dont know about if I can Boot from CD or not..

Someone know anything!?!

Thank you so much!

You can try at the very start of a reboot pressing down on the key "F8", over and over until the window open where you can see safe mode. Then see if you can go to start, accessories, system tools and try a system restore with a date that go back prior to the installation of Kaspersky.

Or try as a last resort in the safe mode, "last good configuration" and click enter with your keyboard.

Okay, first I would try to uninstall Kaspersky. It is a great antivirus but is resource heavy to say the very least. This with the added infection from the malware is probably heavily weighing down your machines resources. Next download update and install AVG antivirus and SuperAntispyware Free edition. Both are free and available on www.download.com. Update and run complete scans with each of these programs. It might be necessary to do this in safe mode. This should remedy the infection. After your computer has returned to somewhat normal functionality. I would uninstall AVG and reinstall Kaspersky and scan the pc again for potential malware. This should clean out all the residual malware from your computer.

As a secondary note to find the serial key for XP installed on your pc. Use magic jelly bean key finder. It will tell you what serial key is installed, so all you will need to do if necessary is copy the serial and reinstall the operating system (which I truly hope you can avoid). Here is a link: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml.

Good Luck!

Just to add your serial key is usually on a sticker on your case unless you put together your own . Also if you have a Norton anti-virus cd, then put it in and shut off your computer and restart. I believe if you have your bios set to boot from the cd first then norton will come up on your screen first and scan for viruses if you choose. That is if I remember correctly.
