I am getting it for my hubby for xmas and just wanted to know if the gun attachment thing would be a good purchase.?

If you are talking about the Wii zapper, its not compatible with Re4, because you need to make gestures with both controllers. RE4, isn't really designed to be used with any of the peripherals, and most of which are mostly an asethetic accessory.
Anyway, long story short, no you don't need it.

Which gun? I hear the Wii Zapper doesn't work well or at all with some games. Check out these guns from third party companies:

There's a few to consider although I don't know which will work with RE:4 and which won't.

The game is super awesome, even without the gun controller. The controller does add even more realism into the game though. I think it's like $20, so I would get it unless that was out of your budget.

I have the game and it's not necessary to have to play the game. He will still have fun without it. :)
