I'm a pre-teen and I'm pretty good at writing for my age, but I really want to get better. How do I get better at writing fast and how do I learn to make my characters deeper. I think it will be easier to write once I learn how to create good characters that have more to them than a general personality and appearance.

You need to brainstorm about your characters. Think about their traits and qualities. This link will show you some questions that might help you develop deeper characters.

As for writing better, read a lot. I have found that the more I read, the better I write. Writing better will come with age as well. I have been writing since I was a pre-teen too and just this year I self-published two of my books. (Self publishing is not recommended for someone who wants writing as a career, which at this point in my life I don't.) One of the stories I finished was one I have worked on since I was 14 (I'm 26 now). I hope this helps.

Your writing will get faster with practice, so thats the easy part.

Well I think you should just start writing about anything. If you have trouble getting an idea watch a movie and try to use the plot as your base and just build off it I'm not saying to copy the movie but just use it for ideas.

For the characters, think of people you go to school with or know. Make your characters act like your friends or your worst enemy. You are more likley to show more emotion that way and make the story really seem real. Try to exagerate their features or change them. Try not to make all of your characters a stereo type. for example if you are making a science geek don't make them really ugly, change things around for once and make them pretty. Make the popular kids nice and kind people but don't make them all super pretty. I'm not saying to make all the characters like that but it's never good when in every book, every person is the same.

Once you have your idea just start writing. then go back and try to add details or change parts that arn't very interesting or unimportant. If you want try to make the same story but with a couple diffrent ending or change some of thr parts. This will give you more options. You can then pick your favorite or combine your two favorite stories. To speed up this process I sugest making organizers first so that you know what you are working on and don't stray off topic.

Good luck with your writing

Before writing stories, decide what kind of plot you want in your story. Then decide what kind of characters would make the story interesting and still fit the plot. Imagine what kind of personalities you want each character to have and then think about what they should look like to fit the personalities. Suppose you want one of your characters to be really nerdy. Describe how she enjoys doing nerdy things like math homework and works on science projects in her spare time. Say that she is very outspoken and always thinks that she is right, no matter what. Add that she always tries to answer people's questions by starting with the phrase "According to my calculations...." Also describe how she looks by maybe saying that she has long, dark brown hair that is always tied into a tight ponytail. Say that she has freckles, a large nose, and big glasses. That will make the readers picture this nerdy girl and know what she is like. If you read a lot, you can get some ideas on how to write from other authors, just don't copy them exactly. I hope this helps!

Stephen King and others say that reading is key to becoming a good writer. Also, practice, practice, practice. Cut out most of the adverbs and edit your work.

Practice... and lots of it. Join a writer's club, preferably filled with older more experienced writers, that will give you feedback.
