i replaced hte belt because it was smelling like burning rubber, i also replaced the idler pulley because it was the only one that even seemed somewhat questionable. the smelling rubber has gone away, but not the clutch or squealing. i replaced the thermostat last year because i was doing a complete flush of the system and had everything off anyway. the temperature never seems to be an issue though. is there a way to check the new a/c pulley, perhaps this is the problem. all the pulleys were spinning free and making no noise.

The clutch is locked up. New one. Make sure you get the forward or reverse clutch, which ever one it calls for.

A cheap way to check, is take a bar of soap and while the engine is running, rub it on the fan belt. Be very careful you don't get your hand hung up in there. The squealing should stop in the belt is slipping. If not you may have a bearing going bad somewhere.
