They have stopped it, if you check amazon, the price has shot up for the 60gb version. You might be able get the normal ones from Argos etc. for the real price.
The reason is that sales have been less than impressive because of the price compared to the Wii or 360, so instead of concentrating on making the profit from games, Sony's solution is to cut a massive 20GB off the hard drive, 2 USB ports, and all backwards compatibility to lower the price to just under £300

Right now Sony just produces the 40GB and 80GB PS3's. On the sites that you are going to, they must be all sold out of the 80GB PS3's or something.
Sony stopped producing the 20GB and 60GB models earlier this year. You can find a 60GB PS3 on sites such as Ebay and Amazon, but it will cost you about the same or even more than the 80GB PS3.

there just trying to cut production costs so people can buy for less. 60GB ones are going to diminish eventually, 40GBs enough

you cant but the 60gb in shops ,they have been phased out ,but you can buy on e-bay.prices have been going up and up and now average about £450!

even if it was true im sure you got could still get hold of a 60GB.
they just want to make money.. some people have a real addiction into buying these gadgets, and feel the need to collect them all.
