There is a heat shield above the catalytic converter. The welds on this will often break and cause a rattling noise! It is an easy thing to re-weld them, and muffler shop can do it for you and it should not cost much!

well....what sounds? it usually is the exhaust vibrating against something under the car....thats the only thing that sounds like a muffler rattling

Generally speaking, anything with a rotary action going through it or close to it can make a lot of rattling noise if bearings, bushings, housing, etc are worn out then components start to get loose and bang around.

mine was actually the brackets that hold the bumper on were cracked and it was making a loud noise

The universal joint need replacing...that can make a similar noise.
