There are a ton of white "running backs," because many of the fullbacks in the NFL are white. I wondered this myself after watching LSU's Jacob Hester run this year, but he's so tough he'll probably be a fullback in the NFL too. Tailbacks, however, have almost exclusively been African-American for several decades.

As for "great," Mike Alstot was a perennial Pro Bowl player.
