I always enjoy people who equate socialism with communism. According to these... uneducated people... Canada, France, Britian, Scandinavian countries, etc. are all communist if we follow their definition. Why must these people blatantly refute anything that is socialized? Many social programs are great! They are helpful answers to people who are in need, although they do get taken advantage of far more than they should.
I can atleast give credit to those people who claim that socialism is one step close to communism, as, in theory, it probably is... but I disagree that it will actually lead to communism.
I know the differences between something socialized, and communism. What does everyone else think? Be sure to justify your answers with more than just an opinion.. such as.. sources? Points go to those who use RELIABLE sources. :)

cookie monster... now now now... look at the class half full instead of half empty. Even though my questions is nothing of the sorts representative of what you claim in your 'answer'.. even if it could be that sort of a question, at least give me the benefit of the doubt. I am not doing it to see if people are as 'smart' as me. Maybe I am doing it to encourage people to educate themselves before taking a stance based on what a talking head claims? I appreciate the answer though. Rest assured, it wasn't my intent.

I find that almost everyone in the states does that.. which is a testimony to A: How uneducated and unworldly we are and B: how Media Programming has a very long lasting effect.
This is a residue of McCarthyism, when all things communist were anti-American/Democratic.
When in fact there has never been a fully practiced communist state. Communism as a doctrine is actually quite enlightened and providing... unfortunately greed is a very strong base ingredient to the power seeking personality... the very same thing that drives someone into leadership makes them susceptible to absolute power corrupting absolutely.. So Stalin, Mao, and Castro become the De facto enemy of a capitalist feudal state Like the USA. And that I believe is why so many Americans confuse the Political policy of communism with the economic principles of a social democracy.
And for all of you that say Socialism denies the entrepreneurial spirit the ability to succeed ... I would say, tell that to all those very successful Dutch,English,Canadian and German Companies.. as for waiting for medical treatment, America is second to dead last for getting treatment within 24 hours for "Any" medical situation... number 10 was Canada. But England, France, Holland all had an average less than 24 hours for any treatment, including free and extremely cheap flat rate Pharmaceuticals...
sorry to go on but this is one of my pet subjects...

Socialism is an Economic system working within another government structure.
Communism is a Governmental structure that has embraced Socialism and taken it to the extreme.
Communism is necessarily Socialist, but being Socialized isn't necessarily Communist. Also, theoretical Communism is very different from actual Communism. The inherent depravity of a human never gets in the way in the theories of Communism, necessitating an enforced Socialist structure to ensure equalities which wouldn't normally naturally exist.

One thing right wing Americans don't seem to get about Social Democracies in Europe is that they still have multiple parties, elections, and parliaments, courts, etc. The people vote for their governments, and if they wanted to get rid of their social security and national healthcare, etc., they could vote it out. Communism is another story. There's only one party in control and if you're not with the party you can be persecuted, denied privileges, imprisoned, etc. And when people go to vote (if they even have elections) there's only one party to vote for. So, these dingbats that equate socialism with communism, and even go so far as to say that the US democrats are communist are so stupid it's embarrassing.

No sources are needed. Socialism is an economic system, communism is a political system.
