My ex-girlfriend and I bought a car together im the co-owner and we ended up breaking up, she said i could take the car cause she physically can not drive the car, and because my other car couldnt probably make it to denver from maryland, I drove to denver cause that is where my family is. When i got here i was expecting to have a job that was like two months ago i moved here, I just now got a job and am two months behind on car payments, at before i was left she said she would help with the payments until i was able to doit myself, but then she said she couldnt doit.. I told her i couldnt doit on my own so i thought it would be best to have the car voluntaraly repossesed and pay off the rest together. I really want to get rid of the car, cause i cant afford it on my own with having to also take care of my son, paying for daycare on top of everything else. I dont know what to do she was saying she was going to call the police and say i stole it cause i told her i was going to have it repossessed.. what can i do

Both of you need to protect your credit history.

Here are some questions that I hope help you.

Can your family help with catching up on old payments?

Can you cancel the contract on the car and return the car with no major penalty to your credit history?

Can you explain your jobless situation to the company? Sometimes they can be quite understanding.

Can you get her off as co owner?

Can you tell her sorry and ask her what she'd like you to do?

Once she told you to take the car and you did, it is easy to see her postion that the payments should be yours. I think that is the case even though legally you are both liable.

So the course of actions to take can be:

Come to an agreement with your ex on the car.

Tell the company what is going on and make arrangements to pay what is owed.

Cancel or buy out of the contract with the car company.

Best wishes.

If your name is on the paperwork and she calls the police and reports it stolen she will be in far more trouble than you will be.
