I'm not wearing a tux to the wedding. I never got the invitation, so I only found out about the wedding a few days ago. I thought it was Black Tie, but it is Black Tie Optional. So, I am wearing my charcoal suit. What kind of tie should I wear? I have a number of ties, but I'm trying to decide if I should buy one for this wedding. Does it matter?

Black tie means tux. So black tie optional means tux or nice suit.

Just pick a tie that goes nice with the suit you're wearing.

Burgundy or dark purple both look great with charcoal gray.

Since everyone seems to have forgotten that you said that you are wearing your charcoal suit.
This particular suit will be fine. No need to spend any money at all on a wedding that you did not receive an invite to. I would have to think about even going in the first place. But, if you go, a nice gold or deep yellow with stripes would look good or brown. Choose something that is a earthy color since this is fall/winter season. Blues and reds and such are spring/summer colors.

It doesn't matter. You could wear a black tie for a joke if you like. If you're wearing a tux, a black bowtie would be appropriate.

There's no need to go out and buy a black tie if you don't have one. Just wear something sedate, like navy blue. It would be better to wear a white shirt.

Do you have a tie that has red in it? Red stripes, or red with small print would look nice at a Christmas time wedding.
